Every week for my Instagram feed I visit and photograph at least one independent coffee shop. I always order a cappuccino and a piece of cake. It’s not been great for my diet, but it has been good for the soul. For reasons unknown, a cup of coffee takes a super picture, and these little cafes are just great to look at. The decor tends to be quirky and interesting. Reclaimed furniture, wooden surfaces with wonderful textures, bookshelves made out of oil drums, fantastic industrial light fittings, each coffee shop brings something different to the table. They are our happy places, aren’t they? Where we meet, drink, talk and eat. So much of the British high street has been diminished in recent years, but our coffee culture goes from strength to strength.
I always leave each coffee shop with far more pictures than I had planned to, and just one gets posted to my Instagram grid. So to celebrate these lovely places a little more, I thought that I would start adding short reviews of each one here on my website. These gems will generally be in my part of the world, Berkshire and South Oxfordshire, and sometimes London. But I hope that you will enjoy them, through me, wherever you are.
I’m afraid I am not a coffee aficionado, I’m very easy to please in that department. My short reviews will focus more on the story of each coffee shop, what it has to offer and what it’s all about. And the quality of its cake, of course.
If you have suggestions for any coffee shops that I may not have visited, then why not leave me a note in the comments section below? Or send me an email firstname.lastname@example.org.
